The critical care area of the hospital cares for patients whose conditions are life-threatening and who require comprehensive care and constant monitoring, usually in intensive care units (ITU) & High Dependency Units (HDU) & Cardiac Care Units (CCU).
This is normally the area of the hospital with the most high-tech equipment including both capital and disposable products, including ventilators, monitors (including cardiac output), infusion pumps, renal replacement therapy, ECMO and associated vascular access devices.
Critical Care patients require constant monitoring from highly trained nursing staff, healthcare assistants and intensivists. Patients will normally be ventilated and require round the clock care, vital signs monitoring and respiratory support.
A range of companies work in this area including Draeger, GE, BD, Edwards Lifesciences, Getinge & Baxter Healthcare & Vygon, requiring candidates to either have a clinical (nursing) or science background and often some previous medical sales experience, normally in medical devices sales. Equally important are commercial skills, the majority of products in this area require sales professionals to work closely with procurement and the finance divisions of the hospital.
