Sales Specialist – <h2>Orthopaedic Implants</h2>

The orthopaedic market is a broad one, consisting of implants and equipment used to treat either a deformity in, or an injury to, the patient’s musculoskeletal system.  An orthopaedic implant is a device used to replace a missing or worn joint or bone, such as a knees, hips, shoulders and extremities (i.e.. fingers and toes).

The orthopaedic implant market is a huge one, with several companies in the UK either manufacturing or distributing a full range of implants.  Selling these products involves working closely with Orthopaedic Surgeons and the associated clinical Theatre teams that consist of Theatre Managers, Theatre Scrub Nurses, ODPs (Operating Department Practitioners) and Anaesthetists.  Your role will be to sell the efficiency of the product to the Surgeon, supporting their case work in the surgical environment and demonstrating the positive outcome for the patient.  In addition, you will need to work closely with hospital Procurement, negotiating price of supply.

Orthopaedics is an area that experienced medical device Territory Managers might move to from a non-surgical background.  Orthopaedics is a competitive market and therefore recruiting managers often look at the personal characteristics and attributes of each candidate ahead of what it is they have sold previously.  Good sales figures, a determination to succeed and competitiveness are traits that are very well received!  Naturally, those with previous experience of selling in the surgical arena may be looked upon favourably, but it is often not the be-all and end-all.  What is essential is the confidence and gravitas to work with Surgeons who will be looking to the Territory Manager for guidance, and who need to earn their customer’s respect by being highly professional and knowledgeable.  In short, life as an Orthopaedic Sales Rep is challenging, hard work, but rewarding.
