Pathology Laboratory
Sales Specialist
Pathology is the study of disease and is key to help clinicians treat patients in hospitals and in the community. The work of pathologists, biomedical scientists and clinical scientists is vital for the effective diagnosis of diseases and infections. Working across the UK these scientific and clinical specialists are involved in preventing, diagnosing, treating and monitoring diseases to help keep people as healthy as possible. Hospital laboratories may run over a billion tests per year costing billions of pounds (500 million biochemistry and 130 million haematology tests per year according to NHS England). All these tests require a huge range of scientific equipment, scientific instrumentation, assays, test kits and consumables.
Hospital pathology laboratories are usually divided into specialist areas such as clinical chemistry, biochemistry, haematology, histology, cytology, microbiology, tissue diagnostics, blood sciences, immunology, blood bank, and often subdivided into transplantation, immunology & histochemistry (I&H), virology, histopathology each with their own specialist laboratory equipment and all linked via the hospital laboratory information management system (LIMS).

Sales Specialist

A pathology laboratory sales specialist (also called Territory Manager, Area Sales Manager, Sales Representative, Area Manager etc) would typically have a background in medical laboratory sciences gained from a degree in biomedical science and/or from working in a hospital pathology department. An alternative background for pathology laboratory sales jobs could come from working as a research scientist in a university department allied to a hospital pathology department. Some companies would offer the chance to move from the hospital laboratory into a trainee pathology laboratory sales specialist job and others will want a successful track record in relevant hospital or scientific sales. The sales specialist may have the support of a laboratory application specialist for their specialist path lab equipment and will have responsibility for generating new business as well as managing existing accounts. The role of a pathology laboratory sales specialist is both rewarding and challenging as hospital laboratories move to a more centralised model and greater commercial acumen and solution sales ability is called for.
Companies specialising in this sector would include Roche Diagnostics, Abbott Diagnostics, Siemens Healthineers, Radiometer, Dako, Bio-Rad, Menarini, BD
