Chester to appeal after Science Park demolition order

The University of Chester has announced it will appeal the council's decision to demolish the Thornton Science Park campus.

Cheshire West and Chester Council's planning committee revealed at the beginning of June that it had voted to refuse the retrospective change of use application for the six buildings currently being used as part of the campus, citing a decision by the Health and Safety Executive that the nearby Stanlow Oil Refinery put students and staff members in danger.

Opened in 2014, the Thornton Science Park has been labelled by many as a key part of the Cheshire-Warrington Science Corridor, providing science jobs to hundreds of staff members and providing the opportunity for science innovation among students.

Commenting on the council's decision, the university spokesperson stated that the council had previous stated that the site would not require additional planning permission, making the outcome of the vote all the more frustrating.

"Thornton Science Park is too important for the university, the wider region and national commercial interests to accept the council’s decision without challenging it," the spokesperson added.

"The university is disappointed with the council's decision but recognises that the planning application is just the beginning of the process and the university is appealing to the Secretary of State to overturn Cheshire West and Chester Council’s decision."
