£15m Newport hospice officially opens

A new hospice in Newport, Wales has officially opened in what's expected to be a boost to local jobs.

The £15m, 15-bed St David's Hospice Care facility is run by St David's Hospice Care (SDHC) in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Newport City Council, and replaces a ten-bed unit at St Anne's Hospice which opened in 1979.

The new facility, which the Welsh government invested £3m in, will expand the in-patient palliative care service for terminally ill patients and their family in the community. Overall, SDHC cares for more than 3,000 patients and their families each year.

Health secretary Vaughan Gething unveiled a plaque to officially open the facility. He said: "The investment from the Welsh Government has enabled the hospice team to deliver patient and family-led services in a new, state-of-the-art facility.

"The team at St David's Hospice Care has developed a palliative care model which is universally recognised as an example of first class care. Now that the new building is complete and open the charity will be able to support more people who need their help at the end of their lives."
