Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Haematologists are responsible for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of benign and malignant disorders of the red and white blood cells, platelets and the coagulation system in adults and children.  In the pathology department in hospitals haematology provides routine and urgent automated blood counting and morphological profiling, coagulation screening, transfusion (blood grouping, antibody screening and blood/blood product provision), specialist haemostasis and haemoglobinopathy investigations. Biomedical Scientists and Clinical Scientists perform these diagnostic assays on a wide range of haematology analysers and report the results to clinicians to enable them to effectively treat patients.

<h2>Sales Specialist</h2>

A haematology sales specialist (also called Territory Manager, Area Sales Manager, Sales Representative, Area Manager etc) would typically have a background in medical laboratory sciences gained from a degree in biomedical science and/or from working in a hospital haematology or blood sciences department. An alternative background for haematology laboratory sales jobs could come from working as a research scientist in a university department allied to a hospital pathology department. Some companies would offer the chance to move from the hospital laboratory into a trainee haematology laboratory sales specialist job and others will want a successful track record in relevant hospital or scientific sales.  The sales specialist may have the support of a haematology lab application specialist for their specialist haematology lab equipment and will have responsibility for generating new business as well as managing existing accounts. The role of a haematology laboratory sales specialist is both rewarding and challenging as hospital laboratories move to a more centralised model and greater commercial acumen and solution sales ability is called for.
