Two hospitals in Central Lancashire will be at the receiving end of £850,000 to invest in additional members of staff to support all its medical duties.

The money will be put towards Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble hospitals’ recruitment drive to ensure extra nurses are brought in to staff the Accidents and Emergency department, and the children and young people’s units across both sites.

The A&E will offer space for 15 new members of staff, whilst the children’s wards will advertise 20 new positions, with a paediatric nurse appointed to be on call during peak periods in both hospitals.

The funding comes above and beyond the £8.4 million that was invested in 2017/18 to improve staffing levels, but had in fact been directed at temporary staffing in order to cover shifts and ensure patient safety.

Nursing and midwifery director, Gail Naylor, told the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust: “There have been many positive outcomes of that investment – including improved ratings [from the regulator] and better patient experiences.

“We have been able to demonstrate that where we have managed to recruit [the necessary] staff, those staff have a much more positive experience – and that leads them to staying with the trust.”
