Urinary (Foley) smart catheter fixations developer Cathetrix is unveiling its new catheter stabilizer, the Foley/Safe 2.0, which is designed to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and accidental extractions. The device is being presented at the MEDICA 2021 trade fair, taking place in Dusseldorf, Germany from November 15-18.

The device seeks to reduce the risk of UTIs associated with catheters by preventing dislodgement and movement. This can prevent unintentional or accidental extraction, avoiding damage to the urethra and bladder. If a catheter is pulled with sufficient force to harm a patient, the device severs the sterile fluid tube and enables the retention balloon to deflate, which in turn allows the catheter to safely slide out.

Cathetrix says that Foley/Safe 2.0 product offers a range of advantages, including: ease of use; stablization of the catheter; prevention of excessive movement; simple attachment; prevention of accidental extraction and saving hospital time.

The device is seen as an efficient way of preventing unnecessary and expensive surgery and hospitalisation and has received both EU CE Mark and US FDA clearance.

Studies have indicated that between 11 and 17 per cent of catheters are extracted unintentionally, while 5 per cent of urological catheters are extracted traumatically. 25 per cent of patients in hospitals, as well as many in hospices and nursing homes, use urinary catheters and dislodging can cause pain and injury, as well as a higher risk of damage and infection.
