UK pharmacy chain Boots says it will begin to offer LumiraDx’s COVID-19 nose swab test, which is claimed to return results in 12 minutes. The tests will initially be rolled out across 50 Boots stores and will cost £120, which Boots claims will make it among the cheapest private COVID-19 tests available.
Tests can be booked online and are conducted using a nose swab, which can then be entered into a portable machine within the store. The tests will be targeted at those who are not experienced coronavirus symptoms, with those displaying symptoms advised to remain at home and book an NHS test.
LumiraDx says the test is designed to offer “peace of mind”, while Boots said that it had taken up the tests in order to ease testing pressure on the NHS.
Seb James, Managing Director of Boots UK and ROI, said: ““Boots has supported the government’s COVID-19 testing programme from the very start and offering this new in-store service is the next step in our efforts to fight against the pandemic”.
“We hope that by offering this testing option in local community stores, Boots can help ease pressure on the NHS and the government by providing additional access to testing and crucial reassurances for people across the UK.”
As the test is not processed through a registered laboratory, the LumiraDx rapid test will not be authorised as a pre-flight test for those required to take a test prior to travel. Boots has launched a separate 48-hour pre-flight-approved testing service, currently available from 10 stores and also priced at £120.
