UK medical imaging company expands to the US

24/01/2012
Eykona, a medical 3D imaging company that was spun out of Oxford University, is aiming to grow its sales to the US market, through the opening of a new office in North Carolina.

The company developed technology that allows doctors to take pictures of wounds such as bedsores or diabetic ulcers and, through turning the pictures into 3D images, enables the doctors to measure how it is healing.

Eykona’s chief executive, Paul Murphy, said that the device could be very valuable to global healthcare. During the last three months of 2011 their devices were tested at 15 NHS centre around the country, on the back of more than £3 million worth of funding.

Mr Murphy said that the UK market for the devices could be as much as £20 million, but could generate some £300 million worth of savings for the NHS.

He warned, however, that adoption of new technology by the health service is an incredibly slow process. He said that the move into the American market could well see them tap into new opportunities and potentially provide them with the funding needed to develop even further. He explained that they had high hopes for the American market, because of the country’s drive to "do things more efficiently".
