NHS gives green-light to adoption of new monitoring equipment

06/12/2011
The National Health Service (NHS) is to instruct medical equipment maker Deltex Medical Group to implement fluid management during surgery using oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) technology.

A new report on the review of innovation in the NHS has indicated that the health body intends to instruct the company to look at countrywide implementation of its CardioQ-ODM device as a priority. The device has been hailed for being "minimally invasive" and the report has put forward plans for "a national drive to get full implementation of ODM, or similar fluid management monitoring technology, into practice across the NHS".

The news has seen the share price of the West Sussex-based technology company jump, rising by 37.8 per cent to 23.95 pence.

The chief executive of the company, Ewan Phillips, said that the announcement by the NHS was an indication of "the end of the market creation phase in the UK" for the CardioQ-ODM, and they could now look at growing it.

"This is a firm statement of intent by the NHS that they will adopt it," Phillips told the Proactive Investors website, but added that they do not know when exactly the NHS will begin the roll out of the technology.

He explained, "I would expect it will only be around the time of our prelims [in March] when we will find out what the timelines are."
