New lab management system improves hospital efficiency
01/11/2011
Laboratory staff at Peterborough City Hospital have seen their efficiency markedly improve, thanks to an innovative new Managed Laboratory Service (MLS) from medical equipment developer, Roche.
The Roche MLS has allowed the hospital's laboratory to speed up its processes and also leaves the hospital with the options and versatility to accommodate future expansion and development of the system.
The MLS is responsible for monitoring analytical equipment, maintenance, reagents and supporting software on Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's two sites in the region. The head of biomedical science for clinical biochemistry and immunology, Keith Palmer, said that the equipment had revolutionised their processes.
"The Roche MLS has enabled us to acquire state of the art technology, allowing the merger of previously separate routine and STAT modular platforms," he said. " This allows simpler, more efficient sample handling and sample routing, and has allowed the department to implement lean working and to review our skill mix."
The set-up - which includes two Roche cobas 8000 modular analyzer series (with ISE, clinical chemistry and immunochemistry modules) and a cobas p 501 post- analytical unit - will allow for built-in system resilience in the event of hardware downtime, ensuring minimal impact on sample turn round. It will also provide risk management operations in the event of changes in work volumes and repertoire.
