New Cardiff plant promises medical sales jobs
13/07/2010
A significant proportion of the 150 positions being created at a new medical technology plant in Cardiff are to be medical sales jobs.
The new £10 million GE Healthcare facility based at the Maynard Centre in Whitchurch was opened this week by Wales's First Minister, Carwyn Jones.
Work on adapting and modernising the centre, originally built in 1980, has taken place over 18 months. Extensive renovation has been carried out on the site to equip it for the transfer of operations from other GE locations.
The 150 new jobs are on top of the 420 people already employed at the Maynard Centre, which has supplied medical equipment to customers across the globe, ranging from multinational pharmaceutical companies to individual research institutes and universities.
The transfer of operations will also see almost 2,000 new products manufactured on the site, adding to the 1,000 different products already made there. The centre will be able to specialise in stem cell therapies, medical imaging and information technologies and medical diagnostics and patient monitoring systems.
Mr Jones said the expansion of the facility was a real confidence boost for industry in Wales.
"GE Healthcare is a very important employer in South Wales," he said. "I wish everyone involved continued success in their endeavour to establish a new high quality, high productivity manufacturing site right here in Whitchurch.”
