Glasgow hospital equipment to include automated robots

21/02/2012
The New South Glasgow Hospitals Campus is to feature some revolutionary new hospital equipment in the form of robotic drones that will move the majority of goods around the new complex.

The 22 robots – or automated guided vehicles (AGVs) – will reduce the risk of moving and handling injuries among staff, as they carry goods and laundry around the £842 million premises on the site of the city’s Southern General Hospital.

They will operate in an underground tunnel and are the result of a hospital equipment contract signed between Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board (GGCHB) and Swiss-based logistics firm Swisslog.

NHS Greater and Clyde chief executive Robert Calderwood said that the robots would be “safe and people-friendly”.

“This first order of the ‘robots’ further demonstrates this is a modern state-of-the-art building designed to be the very best it can be,” he explained.

The hospital has also signed one of the world’s most advanced contracts for laboratory equipment, to fit out its new ‘super lab’, which officially opens its doors in the spring.

The new hospital complex will officially be completed in 2015 with 1109 beds. A key request when the hospital was being designed was that an efficient system be put in place to help move around a variety of equipment and goods.
