Equipment sales deal brings new X-ray equipment to Boston

01/07/2010
A deal has been completed that will see the installation of a pioneering new piece of imaging equipment at Boston's Pilgrim Hospital.

The £120,000 X-ray mobile Image Intensifier (XRII) will provide instant high-resolution images in the hospital's operating theatres during general surgery and vascular procedures. It will also provide continuous live images that can be projected onto a monitor using the fluoroscopy imaging technique, which obtains real-time moving images of the internal structures of a patient.

The hospital's clinical services manager Alison George-Jones said there would be a far more efficient delivery of care thanks to the machine.

"Before we had this machine, we had to share the three we already had between patient cases over two floors, and they are large and difficult to move," she said.

"We now have two on each floor, alleviating this problem. This will minimise delays and on-the-day cancellations."

On hand for the official launch of the machine were senior radiographer Tim Loake, clinical manager for theatres Penny Harrison, radiology services manager Nigel Allen and Sterile Services Manager Graham Stell. They were joined by representatives of X-ray's medical sales team, key account manager, Ian Mitcham, and sales specialist, Simon Bunce, who worked with hospital administrators to structure the deal.

The XRII uses advanced flat panel detector technology to amplify signals from low intensity X-rays, meaning the patient is subject to less radiation exposure than through traditional methods. It also connects to a Picture Archiving and Communication System, affording easy storage, retrieval, management and presentation of images.
