Kirkham Young Supports Local Childrens Hospice at Christmas
PRESS RELEASE
December 9, 2009
RECRUITMENT COMPANY RAISE A GRAND FOR DEMELZA BY CUTTING BACK ON FESTIVE GIFTS
Healthcare sales recruitment company, Kirkham Young, decided this year not to buy Christmas presents for their customers but instead made a donation to Demelza.
The company, based in Chain Lane, Battle, presented a cheque for £1,000 to the charity.
The £1,000 will be used as sponsorship for the community awards planned for May 2010, which are to be held to recognise the hard work of fundraisers in the community who have supported Demelza over the past year.
Sam Kirkham from Kirkham Young said: “We are all very proud to be able to help an organisation like Demelza”.
Demelza Area Fundraising Manager Vicki Pickering said: “I would like to thank all at Kirkham Young for their kind support of our charity this year and in the absence of any Christmas presents this year, I would like to say a very Merry Christmas to all at Kirkham Young and their customers.”
To nominate someone for a community award or to find out more ring Vicki Pickering on: 01323 446460.
Demelza is an organisation providing hospice care for over 570 children with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Kent, East Sussex and South East London through:
Residential Hospice Care
With and eight-bedded hospice in Kent and a brand new six-bedded hospice in South East London opened to families in April 2009, Demelza now provides short break care, day care, symptom control, end-of-life care and bereavement support for over 400 life-limited children and their families. Across the two hospices there are a wide range of facilities that include multi-sensory rooms, Soft Play room, Jacuzzi, and The Inclusion Zone for young adults. Available therapies include music, physiotherapy and aromatherapy. The care team, led by specialist children’s palliative care nurses, make the most of every moment that the child spends at the hospice. Parents have described having the opportunity of an undisturbed night’s sleep as pure luxury. At the end of the child’s illness, we offer a comprehensive service of support using bereavement suites - known as the Hop Garden in Kent and the Butterfly Room in South East London – which along with our Multi Faith Rooms enables a family to let go and say goodbye at their own pace.
Community Care
The Demelza community team provides a care service for around 170 children and families in East Sussex, South West Kent and South East London. Specialist paediatric nurses go directly into the family home to provide day care, crisis intervention, an on-call service and respite. The service helps enable the family to live life, as a family, in their own environment and combined with short breaks and other services at the hospice offers flexibility in care provision. When a child reaches the end of its life the Demelza community team can offer the choice of 24 hour end of life care at home. The community team can provide medical help and expert advice in the home or can simply just allow Mum and Dad to be Mum and Dad again.
Funding our services
Demelza relies almost entirely on fundraising, donations and gifts in wills to keep its services running. We are at the end of the Capital Appeal for the new hospice in South East London, with the ongoing running costs still being sought and to run all our services for the 570 families we care for we need £7million this year.
